Team From ‘Batman Beyond’ Wants You To Demand Its Return

Fans were first introduced to the cyberpunk future world of Batman Beyond back in 1999 and even though the animated series only lasted three seasons (and a straight-to-DVD movie), it left a lasting impact on the Dark Knight’s fanbase that has never quite died down. Now, two decades after the series left the air, the creative team behind the cult classic is ready to bring the show back for an all-new chapter in the Batman Beyond saga. But they’ll need your help to make it happen!

When speaking recently at IGN Fan Fest, Batman Beyond voice and casting director Andrea Romano said that the team behind the show was not only ready to bring it back, but they actively wanted to see the series revived for a new generation. The problem largely seems to lie with Warner Bros., who owns the Batman brand, needing to order the series to production in order for it to actually happen.

Romano suggested that if fans want to see the show return, that they make sure they say it loud enough for Warner Bros. to hear it. She and the rest of the show’s creative team and cast are still around, but unless fans campaign for Warner Bros. to revive the show, it isn’t going to happen on its own. Romano said:

It will depend on the fans asking, and asking, and asking for it until Warner Bros. would be foolish not to. So they have to begin a campaign of sorts and just let Warner Bros. know that that’s what they want. Because we would like to make it, it would be great fun — we’re all still around, we’re all still available, everybody’s still doing beautiful work. So yes please, and thank you.

Batman Beyond followed the story of the next generation of Batman set in the future of the world introduced in Batman: The Animated Series. It starred a new teenage Batman named Terry McGinnis (voiced by Will Friedle) that is following in the footsteps of his new mentor;  the now elderly original Batman, Bruce Wayne (voiced by Kevin Conroy, who returned to the role he originated in Batman: The Animated Series). The series saw new versions of some of Batman’s classic villains while also providing a number of completely original villains and other characters to create an entirely new generation of stories that felt familiar and refreshingly different all at the same time.

Following its three-season run and animated film, the world of Batman Beyond was revisited a number of times throughout Justice League: Unlimited and in a number of comic book series that continued the story following the events of the series.

It’s worth noting that in recent months it has been rumored that Warner Bros. is considering reviving Batman Beyond‘s predecessor, Batman: The Animated Series, for their HBO Max subscription streaming service. While it doesn’t seem entirely likely that Warner Bros would go all-in on two series revivals, could we maybe see both series making their return? Both shows had a lot of overlap on their creative teams, as one series was a direct sequel to the other. Or perhaps we could see a series set in their shared universe that has stories set in both eras? As Warner Bros. hasn’t confirmed plans for either of these, we may not end up getting either! Only time will tell.

In the meantime, if you need to get your fix of animated Batman adventures, you can revisit the original runs of both Batman Beyond and Batman: The Animated Series on the HBO Max subscription streaming service.
