The live-action Powerpuff Girls have been cast for The CW’s pilot featuring an update of the classic Cartoon Network series which will focus on Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttercup as twentysomethings who have turned their backs on super-heroics. Dove Cameron will portray Bubbles, while Chloe Bennet will play Blossom. Buttercup will be portrayed by Broadway’s Yana Perrault.
As was reported last month, this reboot will showcase the Powerpuff Girls as “disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime-fighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?” So far, The CW has only ordered a pilot, but should that go well, this could wind up airing later this year. This project will be written and executive produced by Heather Regnier (the Veronica Mars reboot) and Diablo Cody (One Mississippi). Greg Berlanti and Berlanti Productions banner partner Sarah Schechter and CW TV president David Madden will also serve as executive producers.
Cameron portrays Bubbles, the squeaky and sweet PPG:
“She still sparkles as an adult, but her charming exterior belies an unexpected toughness and wit. She’s initially more interested in recapturing her fame than saving the world, but she just might surprise us and herself.”
Cameron won an Emmy for starring in the Disney series Liv & Maddie. She is also known for heading up the cast of the Descendants movie series and as a recording artist. She previously appeared alongside Bennet on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on which she guest-starred as Ruby. In other superhero news, she provides the voice of Gwen Stacy/Ghost-Spider in various animated projects.
Bennet, who is best known for playing Agent Skye/Daisy Johnson/Quake on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., will portray the Powerpuff Girls’ leader, Blossom:
“Though she was a spunky, conscientious, little-miss-perfect child who holds several advanced degrees, Blossom’s repressed kiddie-superhero trauma has left her feeling anxious and reclusive, and she aims to become a leader again — this time on her own terms.”
Bennet previously co-starred on the series Nashville as Hailey. Like Cameron, Bennet also lends her voice to various Marvel animated series as her Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. character, Quake.
Perrault doesn’t have any film or television credits, but starred in the Broadway musical Jagged Little Pill, based on the work of Alanis Morrissette, and was poised to join the cast of Hamilton before Broadway shut down due to COVID-19. She will portray the badass Buttercup in this pilot.
“More sensitive than her tough exterior suggests, Buttercup has spent her adulthood trying to shed her Powerpuff Girl identity and live an anonymous life.”
It remains to be seen who will be cast as the adult characters, but can I suggest Sia as the Mayor’s assistant, Sara Bellum?
Once again, this is just a pilot but check back to see if The CW orders this to series.
