On the list of news stories that I never thought I would have to write, this one is probably ranked pretty high up there. Recently leaked photographs from the set of Marvel Studios‘ Thor: Love And Thunder have revealed that actress Melissa McCarthy has joined the cast of the film as… Hela?!
Yes, you read that correctly. Melissa McCarthy has been seen running around the set of Thor: Love And Thunder in a Hela costume. Before you get too confused though, McCarthy does not actually appear to be taking over the role of the Thor: Ragnarok villain previously played by Cate Blanchett, although she is playing Hela. Confused? Bear with us.
Recent set photos posted by The Daily Mail show McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone alongside Luke Hemsworth as they give an all new take on the fan favorite stage play sequence from the first act of Thor: Ragnarok. The previous stage play seen in the third Thor film featured Luke Hemsworth, Matt Damon, and Sam Neill as Asgardian actors portraying Thor, Loki, and Odin respectfully. All three of them appear to be back for this new Thor film and now Melissa McCarthy has joined in on the fun as an Asgardian actress portraying Hela as the “cast” reenacts the battle between Odin’s three children seen in Thor: Ragnarok.
This will mark the second time that Thor star Chris Hemsworth will be sharing a screen with Melissa McCarthy. The pair had previously worked together extensively on Ghostbusters: Answer The Call (2016).
The film is set to see the return of Natalie Portman‘s Jane Foster to the franchise after she was absent from the third film, but this time she’s coming back swinging as she is set to take up the mantle of the God Of Thunder herself! The film is said to be heavily inspired by comic writer Jason Aaron’s storylines from Thor and The Mighty Thor.
Thor: Love And Thunder is the fourth film in the Thor franchise and sees director Taika Waititi stepping behind the camera once again following the massive critical and financial success of Thor: Ragnarok. The film stars Chris Hemsworth (Extraction), Tessa Thompson (Westworld), Natalie Portman (Annihilation), Jaimie Alexander (Blindspot), Chris Pratt (Jurassic World), Dave Bautista (Hotel Artemis), Karen Gillen (Doctor Who) and Christian Bale (The Dark Knight). Thor: Love and Thunder is set to hit theaters on May 6, 2022.
