The CW has faith in the Man of Steel, as it has renewed Superman & Lois on the same day as the show’s second episode is scheduled to air. There will be 17 episodes of the first season.
This series is part of the “Arrowverse” and is sort of a spin-off of Supergirl, the show on which Tyler Hoechlin first appeared as Superman/Clark Kent. Hoechlin heads up this cast as a Man of Steel that has never appeared in an adaptation, older than usual, and the married father of two teenage sons. He is joined by Elizabeth Tulloch as Pulitzer-winning journalist, Lois Lane, and Jordan Elsass and Alex Garfin as 14-year-old twins Jonathan and Jordan.
According to The CW CEO Mark Pedowitz:
“The phenomenal multiplatform debut of Superman & Lois, which delivered for us in a big way on both a linear and streaming basis, is a testament to the creativity, hard work and dedication of the talented people who worked tirelessly in front of and behind the camera, especially in this challenging environment. We are thrilled to now have two brand-new bona fide hits in Superman & Lois and Walker, both of which have been renewed for next season along with 11 other of our shows, further positioning us for continued strength and stability for next season.”
As Pedowitz stated, multiplatform viewings were heavily weighed, indicating that this series performed well on other platforms, as opposed to strictly live viewings. Reportedly, the pilot episode drew 1.75 million viewers and a 0.37 rating among adults 18-49, which according to The CW, marks the largest audience for any of its DC Comics-based shows since the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event in 2019. This was also the largest “day-one” streaming audience for a new series in the network’s history. With delayed (DVR) viewing, the audience rose to 2.7 million viewers.
Superman & Lois was developed for television by Greg Berlanti and Todd Helbing. It was ordered straight-to-series last January, but COVID-19 delayed production for several months.
The series also stars Emmanuelle Chriqui as Lana Lang Cushing, Clark’s childhood friend; Erik Valdez as Kyle Cushing, Lana’s asshole husband; Inde Navarrette as Lana and Kyle’s daughter, Sarah; Adam Rayner as Morgan Edge, the new owner of the Daily Planet, who keeps Lois employed, but fires Clark; Dylan Walsh as Lois’ dad, Samuel Lane; and Wolé Parks as… the show’s villain. The news of Superman & Lois‘ renewal was accompanied by a second-season order for Walker, starring Supernatural‘s Jared Padalecki.
