I love the Aliens universe and anything connected to it, heck I bought the Xenomorph and Ripley skins in Fortnite on day one while I rarely play the game itself. It just looks cool! Honestly, something about a Xenomorph dancing to Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” tickles me. It also may explain why I am so bad at the game as I tend to spend more time dancing than killing.
As reported by IGN, Cold Iron Studios has announced Aliens: Fireteam, an upcoming third-person survival co-op shooter for Xbox, Xbox Series X, PS4, PS5, and Steam that is scheduled for release in Summer 2021.
From the trailer they released today, it certainly looks great, and a third-person perspective in the Aliens universe is very welcome these days. While Alien: Isolation did a great job with nightmarish horror, constantly swiveling to check what’s behind you could be a dizzying affair at times. Gearbox’s troubled 2013 Aliens: Colonial Marines eventually was fixed and made into a very tense and exciting game but never caught on with the masses due to the controversies attached to the promotion and AI problems that plagued the release.
Both games had their strengths, and it looks like this online-only co-op game will quite literally offer a new perspective. From the video and screenshots, the action seems fast-paced and lethal.
As for when the game takes place, it exists in the established Alien continuity, about 26 years after the first three films. I certainly hope we get little references and some juicy fan service, even some Hadley’s Hope DLC would be wonderful. I’d personally pay for some DLC from the USM Auriga of Alien Resurrection. To play as the Betty Crew would make me very happy. Until then, I plan to keep an eye on this game and will probably end up buying it right away as I have no self control when it comes to Aliens games.
