Tim Allen Reveals ‘Galaxy Quest 2’ Script Was “Hysterical And Fun”

Galaxy Quest was ranked the 7th best Star Trek film of all time at the 2013 Star Trek Convention and fans are still waiting for a sequel to that film. However, it looks like we’ll be waiting quite a while longer according to Tim Allen.

Hopes were high in 2014 when it was revealed that not only was a script written for Galaxy Quest 2, it just needed a studio that would produce it. Unfortunately, the death of Alan Rickman in 2016 stalled these plans. In an interview with EW, Allen remarked how Rickman’s character was key to the sequel’s story as it would have focused on the friendship between Allen’s character Jason Nesmith (a.k.a. Commander Quincy Taggart) and Rickman’s character Alexander Dane (a.k.a. Dr. Lazarus):

“It’s a fabulous script but it had a hiccup because the wonderful Alan Rickman passed. So, it all got very sad and dark because [the script] was all about [Lazrus] and Taggart. It was all about their story.”

Allen went on and teased a little more about the script saying that the plot revolved around light-speed travel which would find the Galaxy Quest crew out of sync with the rest of Earth. However, he’s still hopeful this story could be updated saying:

“It doesn’t mean they can’t reboot the idea, and the underlying story was hysterical and fun… I haven’t reached out to anybody in the last week, but we talk about it all the time. There is constantly a little flicker of a butane torch that we could reboot it with. Without giving too much away, a member of Alan’s Galaxy Quest family could step in and the idea would still work. [The sequel] could happen now or in five years and it doesn’t matter at all because when you travel at light speed, when you come back it can be like only 20 minutes, but 20 years have passed, right? That part is wonderful for the sci-fi freak in me. But right now, it’s in a holding pattern.”

While we all wait for a sequel, we can also hope that Dreamworks soon releases a director’s cut of Galaxy Quest. According to THR, when the studio decided to release Galaxy Quest, they edited the movie (against the wishes of director Dean Parisot) to make it a more kid-friendly film since it was going up against Stuart Little. They cut several scenes, many due to its risqué nature. Sigourney Weaver, whose own Lieutenant Tawny Madison’s F-bomb was cut, remarked:

“That all had to go so they could make it a kids movie, which is such a shame. I would buy Galaxy Quest with the cut scenes added back just to see Alan doing some of those scenes. This was a very sophisticated picture, and they could have had a wider audience with the more adult-take on the Star Trek of it.”

By Grabthar’s Hammer, that comment alone is enough to clamor for an extended cut of the original film!
