Wizard World Postpones Three January Cons Due To COVID-19

It might no longer be 2020, but we are still feeling the effects of COVID-19. Nearly every major convention last year was canceled or went virtual, and we may see the same thing in 2021. Wizard World had three events scheduled for January, but with coronavirus cases still increasing in some areas and a lot of large metropolitan locales still under some form of quarantine, those have been postponed.

Wizard World Philadelphia was supposed to be held on January 15-17, but has now been pushed back to November 12-14, 2021. It will be held at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center.

“Postponed” may not be the accurate word when it comes to Wizard World New Orleans and Wizard World Portland, but that’s the term the organizers are using. New Orleans was supposed to be held on January 8-10 this year but has been “postponed” until January 7-9 of NEXT year, 2022. Portland has similarly been delayed until next year, moving from January 29-31, 2021 to January 28-30, 2022.  Er… technically, doesn’t that mean that this year’s shows have just been canceled? Just sayin’.

New Orleans’ expo will take place at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, and Portland’s will take place at the Oregon Convention Center.

Any potential attendees who already purchased tickets to this January’s shows will be able to use them at the postponed shows. Artists, exhibitors, and other guests should expect to be contacted by Wizard World regarding the new dates.

Wizard World plans to offer virtual events in place of the moved shows.

These delays follow those of other big cons. Los Angeles Comic-Con is currently planned for September. Emerald City Comic Con and Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo are expected to take place in December. Last year, Disney wasn’t taking any chances. It postponed Star Wars Celebration Anaheim to 2022, skipping 2021 entirely.  (They might have had the right idea.) It will take place in August next year.

At this rate, expect similar announcements for other major fêtes, considering just how much planning is required to put them on.wizard It remains to be seen what organizers opt to do with San Diego Comic-Con International and New York Comic Con among others.

Are you looking forward to attending cons in person again?
