After spending years in development, Sony’s film adaptation of the video game Uncharted is finally due to arrive in July. Tom Holland stars as lead character Nathan Drake in this picture, which serves as a prequel to the games. Ruben Fleischer directed and Mark Wahlberg co-stars as Drake’s mentor, Victor “Sully” Sullivan.
Four new photos have been released which tease the film’s plot. (via Twitter) These aren’t the typical “glamor shot” publicity photos. (For that, see above.) Instead, these cryptic images merely offer hints as to the movie’s story and tone.

Shown are two bejeweled crucifixes, at least one of which functions as a key to… something. A treasure chest, maybe? There is also a dusty statue of a man on horseback and a map of the world (minus Australia).
I do not play video games, so I don’t know if these artifacts are part of the source material. If so, then for gamers, these pictures may offer some juicy clues to the movie.
Uncharted (the game) follows the adventures of Nathan Drake, a potential descendant of Sir Francis Drake, a treasure hunter that travels the globe seeking antiques of value. The series’ most obvious inspiration is the Indiana Jones film franchise, although another clear influence is Tomb Raider.
Despite being shut down due to COVID-19, along with every other TV and film production, Uncharted was actually moved FORWARD on Sony’s schedule. It was previously scheduled to open on October 8, but will now hit theaters on July 16. (Before this, it had been bumped all over the calendar.)
Rumblings of an Uncharted movie adaptation first surfaced in 2008, a year after the first Uncharted video game hit the Playstation console. At one time, Wahlberg was attached to play Nathan Drake.
The final film will also co-star Antonio Banderas, Sophia Taylor Ali, and Tati Gabrielle. Once again, Uncharted will hit theaters on July 16.
