We’ve officially made it through 2020 and have arrived in the new year of 2021, which we are excited to say means we are ever so slightly closer to the eventual release of the Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse sequel!

The first Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse film was a runaway smash hit that dominated the box office upon its release in 2018 and received wide acclaim from critics and Marvel fans alike. It would be an understatement to say that Into The Spider-Verse was a massive success, with many fans viewing the film as one of the best superhero film adaptations of all time. Some even consider it the best Spider-Man film ever made!

No one could have predicted just how big Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse would end up being, with its out-of-this-world story featuring various Spider-Men (and Women, and Pigs) from several alternative dimensions in the Multiverse! Literally, anything could have happened in this movie, and fans were ready to embrace the wide world of the Marvel Multiverse for the first time in a large mainstream project.

This week, to celebrate the new year, the official Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Twitter account posted a new teaser to remind fans that the previously announced sequel to Into The Spider-Verse was now even closer to release! Check out the original Tweet below!

The film, which is yet to be titled, was originally set to release in April 2022 but was pushed back a few months to October of 2022 due to production delays caused by the Covid-19 global pandemic. Due to the nature of animated projects (as opposed to live-action), production for this film is a little bit less complicated by all of the pandemic restrictions. The yet to be titled film will likely keep its current release window of October 2022.

The image shared in the teaser tweet features the character Spider-Man 2099, from the comic book series of the same name. This character had a very brief cameo at the tail-end of the credits of the first Spider-Verse movie, so it is entirely possible that this is just a callback to that rather than an official announcement that Spider-Man 2099 will be a major character in the Spider-Verse sequel.

Plot details for the Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse sequel have so far been kept under wraps, leaving fans of the first film to speculate what we may be able to look forward to in the eventual sequel. Jake Johnson, who starred in the first film as Peter B. Parker (a Spider-Man from another dimension), recently told Fandom that he doesn’t even know if he is going to be returning for the sequel yet!

I would really hope so, I really loved playing Peter B. Parker. I literally recorded that movie for, I think it was over two years. People don’t realize, most of… with animation, you do two or three records and it’s over. I lived with that character before anyone knew it was happening for so long. I loved the material. I got to record with Shameik (Moore) a lot who played Miles, and we got to bounce off each other. Shameik and I became buddies and we’re still texting and in touch.

It sounds like Johnson is hopeful about returning for the Spider-Verse sequel! He then went on to talk about questions that even he has about where Peter B. Parker may be following the adventurous events of the first film:

I would love to see Peter, what happens to him. I would love to see, did he and MJ get back together? Did he become a dad? Is he still a superhero? Is he a dad and a superhero? But these are all as a fan now, because in terms of the inside I’m not at that table making decisions, but I would love Peter to come back.

The yet to be titled Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse sequel stars Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, and that is literally all we know about the sequel so far! Hopefully, we will find out more casting news sooner rather than later, as we know plenty of people are excited to see who is along for the adventure this time around!

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel is set to hit theaters on October 7, 2022.
