Production On ‘The Orville’ S3 Has Been Delayed Once Again

It seems as though The Orville Season 3 has been delayed even further.  The series originated on FOX, but in 2019, it was announced that it was shifting over to Hulu due to long production demands. (In other words, S3 would not be ready to launch in the fall of 2019, and network shows don’t take seasons or years off the way streaming programs do.) At that time, it was expected that The Orville S3 would arrive on Hulu in late 2020. But then… Wah Waaaaaaah!… a little something called COVID-19 came along and scuttled all of Hollywood’s plans.

S3 began filming in October 2019, but was shut down last March. The show expected to resume production in December, but due to a spike in coronavirus cases in Los Angeles, this is among several Disney-owned series that will instead hopefully pick back up the week of January 18.

It was The Orville‘s extensive use of makeup and special effects that necessitated its move to Hulu in the first place. It’s not quite clear how much had been filmed at the time that it shut down in March or if any post-production work was done in the interim. (It’s a safe bet that no post-production was done for at least a few months as even that aspect of Hollywood was shut down for quite a while.)

Also, keep in mind that The Orville‘s creator, star, writer, and director, Seth MacFarlane is also the mastermind behind The Family Guy, which is also chugging ahead post-coronavirus.

Should things go according to plans, it’s quite possible that The Orville S3 will arrive on Hulu sometime this year.

Per Deadline, the other Disney Television Studios programs that have been delayed are: ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, Station 19, American Housewife, Black-ish, Mixed-ish, and Rebel; NBC’s This Is Us; Fox’s 911, 911: Lone Star, and Last Man Standing; FX’s American Crime Story: Impeachment, American Horror Story, and Mayans; Disney+’s Big Shot; and Hulu’s Love, Victor.

CBS Studios, Warner Bros. TV, and Universal TV have also delayed the starts of their shows that are filmed in the Los Angeles area.

Are you disappointed that The Orville has been postponed once again?
