Disney is once again shuffling projects across its calendar with its various subsidiaries including 20th Century Studios. The highly-anticipated video game comedy, Free Guy, directed by Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) and starring Ryan Reynolds, has received a new release date. You can now look forward to seeing this picture on May 21, 2021.
Disney and 20th Century did not state exactly how Free Guy would be released, but then again, may not know at this point. It could be released exclusively to theaters, possibly with a shortened window before going to digital. Or it could be released simultaneously in theaters and on streaming, either on Hulu or Disney+’s new STAR subdirectory for adult content.
In Free Guy, a bank teller who discovers he is actually a background player in an open-world video game, decides to become the hero of his own story…one he rewrites himself. Now in a world where there are no limits, he is determined to be the guy who saves his world his way…before it is too late. Starring Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, and Taika Waititi, Free Guy is directed by Shawn Levy from a story by Matt Lieberman and a screenplay by Lieberman and Zak Penn. The film is produced by Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Adam Kolbrenner with Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, George Dewey, Dan Levine and Michael Riley McGrath serving as executive producers.
Free Guy was supposed to open this past August but was pushed back to December 11. But since theaters aren’t really back up and running across the country or the world, it has now been moved again.
In addition to this release date change, Disney/20th Century have also announced that Death on the Nile, the all-star sequel to Murder on the Orient Express, will open on September 17, 2021, and The King’s Man will be released on March 12, 2021.
