In space, no one can hear you stream!

Today at the Disney Investor Day presentation it was announced that an Alien television series is on the way from showrunner Noah Hawley.

Hawley, the man behind recent television success stories like Fargo and Legion, is set to both write and executive produce this new television series based on the classic sci-fi horror franchise. Director Ridley Scott, who first created the Alien franchise and also directed both Alien and Alien: Covenant, is in advanced talks to executive produce the show.

The series is planned to be set on Earth, which is a big change for the franchise which has been predominantly set in space. Its also set to take place “not too far into our future”. While the Xenomorph creatures have been seen on earth in modern times in the two Alien Vs. Predator films, this would be the first time that we would see them on earth. Previously, they were brought there directly by the Predator species that hunt them (and just about everything else) for sport.

FX chief John Landgraf spoke today during the Disney Investor Day presentation and announced that the TV series is officially in development from Hawley.

Alien will be helmed by Fargo and Legion’s’ Noah Hawley stepping into the creator/executive producer chair, and FX is in advanced negotiations with Academy Award winner, Sir Ridley Scott—director of the first Alien film and the sequel, Alien: Covenant—to join the project as an executive producer.

Set not too far into our future, it’s the first Alien story set on Earth — and by blending both the timeless horror of the first Alien film with the non-stop action of the second, it’s going to be a scary thrill ride that will blow people back in their seats.

It has been known for some time that Hawley had pitched an Alien television series, but many thought the project to be dead in the water. In an earlier interview, when asked about this pitch, Hawley replied:

As I did with Legion, the exercise is: Let’s take the superhero stuff out of the show and see if it’s still a great show. What’s the show about? Let’s take the Alien out of the show. What’s the show about? What are the themes, who are the characters and what is the human drama? Then we drop the Aliens back in and we go, ‘This is great. Not only is there great human drama, but there’s Aliens!’

It sounds like Hawley has a firm grasp as to what he plans to do for this new series, and we could not possibly be more excited about it.

The Alien television series from Noah Hawley is set to stream exclusively on FX On Hulu when it eventually premieres. No release date or casting information was made available at this time.
