Could Bill S. Preston Esquire & Ted ‘Theodore’ Logan be coming back for a fourth totally bodacious adventure throughout time, space, and reality as we know it? While a fourth Bill & Ted film isn’t necessarily in development, series star Alex Winter says that they aren’t quite ready to close that book for good just yet!
In a recent interview with Collider, Alex Winter hinted that a fourth chapter in the cult classic Bill & Ted franchise is entirely possible and most likely to happen. As long as the story is as satisfying to him and co-star Keanu Reeves as the recent Bill & Ted: Face The Music was, we may see them again.
Winter implied heavily that the duo loved working together, saying:
We made this film because Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon came to Keanu [Reeves] and myself with an idea that we thought was genuinely both hilarious and emotional, which is not easy. We would never have done it, if it didn’t do both of those things because frankly there would have been no way to play the characters, if it didn’t do both of those things. We like working together. We don’t need to do another one. We don’t particularly feel there needs to be another one, but we would enjoy making another one. That’s really the honest answer. There’s nothing more to it. We are not currently planning another one. Certainly, no one has come to us and asked us to do another one. I don’t know where those chips are gonna fall. I can tell you that, if there was interest in making another one, and Keanu and I had the ability to come in and do something that would be as satisfying as what we just did, sure. We would both be interested in doing that.
Winter has played Bill S. Preston Esquire opposite Reeves’ Ted ‘Theodore’ Logan for all three of the Bill & Ted films; 1989’s Excellent Adventure, 1991’s Bogus Journey, and 2020’s Face The Music. The pair even lent their voices to the first season of the animated series Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures!
Winter and Reeves are the heart and soul of the Bill & Ted story, and the sincerity of their performances in these roles is a major part of what makes the series so successful with fans.
The third and most recent entry in the series, Bill & Ted: Face The Music, was released earlier this year amid a summer that was weighed down by a global pandemic that seemingly decimated the box office. But somehow, between drive-in theaters and the option to rent the film for streaming from the safety of your home, Face The Music ended up being one of the biggest movies of the year despite mixed reviews. Something about the pair and their need to urge people “to be excellent to one another” has kept fans treating the franchise quite excellently as well.
While Winter has flat out said that there is currently not a fourth film for the Bill & Ted franchise in development, it definitely doesn’t seem like the world is ready to say goodbye to these Wyld Stallyns just yet. It took them almost thirty-years to get the third film made, so here’s hoping that a fourth film comes along a bit sooner – if it’s going to happen!
