After several years of silence it looks like Warner Bros. is finally making some new progress on their long in-development Plastic Man film. Alongside this progress are some major changes for the character that could change their brand forever!

First announced back in 2018, Plastic Man was being planning as a live-action comedic adventure film based on the fan favorite DC Comics character who can stretch and reshape his body into just about anything he can come up with.

When this project was first announced, Amanda Idoko (The Mayor) had been hired to write the script for the film. Now it looks like Warner Bros. are heading in a different direction entirely with this project, tapping writer Cat Vasko to take over writing the film.

While Plastic Man is still in very early stages of development, it is now being prepared as a female-led superhero film, which would certainly be a new spin on the character! It has not been confirmed if this major change in the character would also mean a change in the film’s title.

The Plastic Man character was created way back in 1941 by Jack Cole under the Quality Comics banner. He became a DC Comics character when DC bought the rights to a number of the Quality Comics characters following the publishers shut down in the 1950s.

The original Plastic Man story tells the tale of Patrick ‘Eel’ O’Brian; a man who grew up on the streets and found himself living a life of crime. One night, when a heist went south, O’Brian found himself shot and ended up completely soaked in a mysterious chemical spill. When he finally came to, he realized he now had fantastic new powers unlike anything he had ever seen before! That’s when O’Brian decided to turn over a new leaf and use his newfound powers for good, becoming the shape-shifting superhero Plastic Man!

Over the years the character would go on to moderate success, eventually becoming a member of the Justice League in the DC Universe. While he is not generally considered a household name, Plastic Man definitely has a cult following of loyal fans that would love to see the character done right in live action.

Walter Hamada (who has produced other DC Comics adaptations like Aquaman, The Joker, Shazam, and Birds Of Prey) and Chantal Nong are heading up development of this project for Warner Bros. Studios.

Cat Vasko, the new writer behind Plastic Man, has spent the last few years building up her reputation in the industry with a penchant for writing stories featuring strong female characters. Unfortunately many of the projects she has worked on are either still forthcoming or have stalled in development over time, so there is not much out there in the public eye.

At this time there is no information as who is being eyed for the films lead role or a planned release date. We will keep you posted as more information becomes available.
