Move over Mando! This week Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star Diego Luna confirmed that filming has already begun on his new Star Wars television series for Disney+!

The series, which is a prequel story to Rogue One focusing on Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor character, has begun production in London. This new prequel show was announced last year with plans to begin production in 2020. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy had said that this Rogue One prequel was set to premiere in 2021, meaning that the show appears to be sticking to its original schedule despite the ongoing global health crisis.

During an interview with Jimmy Kimmel Live, Diego Luna let slip that he is currently filming “a short film with some friends” in London. It was Kimmel himself that then let loose that the project was actually “for Disney+ with Lucasfilm involved”, which clearly alludes to the Rogue One spinoff and confirms that cameras are officially rolling.

The series is said to be an espionage drama set in the Star Wars universe centering on Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and his droid K-2SO (Alan Tudyk). It is set to take place early on in the Galactic Civil War era of continuity, around the same place in the timeline as Star Wars: Rebels and not too long before Rogue One.

Lucasfilm looks to be leaning hard into the Disney+ streaming platform and live-action Star Wars television series for the foreseeable future. They’ve put all Star Wars theatrical films on hold until at least 2023 and with the outstanding success of The Mandalorian, it isn’t hard to see why. There has been talk of several different spinoff series from The Mandalorian, along with an Obi-Wan Kenobi focused series, a rumored Boba Fett series, and this Rogue One prequel.

What are you hoping to see from this new Star Wars series on Disney+? Are you excited for more adventures with Cassian Andor, or would you rather he have been left in the past? Let us know in the comments section below and stick around here at Geek Anything for all of the latest Star Wars news!
