“Destiny Waits For No God” In The Trailer For ‘American Gods’ Season 3

Some familiar faces are back and some new ones appear in the trailer for STARZ’s upcoming American Gods Season 3.  Following the conclusion of Season 2, Shadow Moon  (Ricky Whittle) is laying low in the idyllic yet frosty town of Lakeside, and wants nothing to do with Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane), the diety that turned out to be his biological father. But there would be no show if he were successful at turning his back on his true nature, so that plan obviously doesn’t go according to his plans. It seems that he can’t avoid Wednesday for long.

The new clip also teases Laura Moon (Emily Browning) on a quest to procure a weapon capable of killing Wednesday, Salim (Omid Abtahi) who appears to be in turmoil (more on that after the video), and what looks to be a split in the ranks between the gods Mr. World (Crispin Glover), Technical Boy (Bruce Langley), and Bilquis (Yetide Badaki).  Peter Stormare’s Czernobog and Demore Barnes’ Mr. Ibis are also back.  Mad Sweeney (Pablo Schreiber) also briefly pops up in a dream sequence.

Among the newcomers are Blythe Danner as the goddess Demeter; Julia Sweeney as Hinzelmann, a woman who welcomes Shadow to his seemingly idyllic new residence in Lakeside; Eric Johnson as Lakeside’s police chief Chad Mulligan; Ashley Reyes as Wednesday’s new assistant, Cordelia; Iwan Rheon, as another leprechaun, Liam Doyle (replacing Mad Sweeney… something I’m still not over); Marilyn Manson as death metal rocker, Johan Wengren (who has some connection to vikings); Lela Loren as Marguerite Olsen, Shadow Moon’s new landlady, a single mother, and reporter; Herizen F. Guardiola as Oshun, the Yoruban goddess of love; rapper Wale as one of the Orisha African gods; and perhaps most interestingly, Danny Trejo and Pose‘s Dominique Jackson as alternate forms taken on by Mister World.

Watch the trailer below:

American Gods has been plagued by issues behind the scenes.  The show’s creators and original showrunners, Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, were fired after the first season, resulting in costars Gillian Anderson and Kristin Chenoweth departing as well.  Jesse Alexander and Neil Gaiman took over as co-showrunners, but reportedly, Alexander had a very small role and was even banned from the set at one point.  Orlando Jones, who portrayed Mr. Nancy/Anansi became a major writer and producer on the series but was fired about a year ago, leading him to unleash a fiery tirade on social media.  It was also revealed that Mousa Kraish, who played The Jinn, Salim’s love interest, had also been fired, which is probably why Salim looks so sad in the trailer.  (His individual character poster bears the inscription “God Forsaken.”)  Charles “Chic” Eglee has taken over as showrunner for Season 3.

Despite all the changes, it looks as though American Gods is coming back full-force.  If you are still a fan, Season 3 debuts on STARZ on Sunday, January 10.
