Metal Gear Solid is quite possibly one of the most popular video games in recent history, with its main character, Solid Snake, even making an appearance in Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Oscar Isaac is quite possibly one of the most popular male actors to grace movie screens in recent history, making appearances in numerous popular franchises, including Star Wars and X-Men, and will soon be seen in the Warner Bros reboot of Dune next year.
How are these connected? Because it’s been confirmed that Oscar Isaac has been cast as Solid Snake in the live-action adaptation of Metal Gear Solid, and fans are excited about the news.
Deadline broke the news on Friday, and the project’s director, Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who also directed 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, celebrated the news by sharing an image of Isaac on Twitter. Along with the image, Vogt-Roberts included a caption of only four emojis: a cardboard box, a snake, a pair of surprised eyes, and an exclamation point. Vogt-Roberts is clearly advertising his fondness for the game and proving that he’s the right person to helm the project.

No date has been announced for production of the project but a script from writer Derek Connolly (Safety Not Guaranteed) exists. Metal Gear Solid won’t be the first time Vogt-Roberts and Connolly will have worked together; Connolly also wrote the screenplay for Kong: Skull Island so perhaps the chemistry between the writer and director will show through in the final product.
But naturally, audiences are cautious when it comes to big-screen adaptations of popular video games as there’s not a great track record for quality. Everyone points to Super Mario Brothers as the epitome of a bad video game movie but that film is 18 out of 43 on Rotten Tomatoes’ rankings of Video Game Movies. The inclusion of Oscar Isaac in Metal Gear Solid will elevate the quality of the movie to some degree as he is a fantastic actor and all, but we won’t be able to say for sure until the film’s release. And given Isaac’s busy schedule and the coronavirus restrictions that are still in place, who knows when that will be?
