A long time ago, in a studio far, far, away (unless you live in Hollywood)…

STAR WARS DETOURS!

Way back in the distant past of 2012, Lucasfilm collaborated with Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, the creative team behind Robot Chicken, to create an all-new CG-animated television series set to parody the Star Wars universe titled Star Wars Detours.

The show would have aired in six-minute segments and focused on the lives of various characters from every corner of the Star Wars universe in between the events of the prequel Star Wars trilogy and the classic Star Wars trilogy.

Sadly the show was postponed after Disney bought Lucasfilm in late 2012. They then announced that they were going to focus their efforts on an all-new Star Wars sequel trilogy of films. With this all-new era of Star Wars on the way, Lucasfilm no longer had a place for Star Wars Detours in their plans.

After being shelved for some time, the project was quietly canceled entirely. Seth Green claims that they had completed at least 39 episodes of the animated series prior to the project being shelved. None of them had ever made it to the air or been seen by anyone outside the development of the project… until now!

Earlier this week, one of the completed six-minute segments of Star Wars Detours leaked on Reddit, giving fans our first real glimpse of the series after sitting there gathering proverbial dust for nearly a decade.

The leaked segment is named “Dog Day Afternoon“. It follows fan-favorite bounty hunters Zuckuss and 4-LOM (as voiced by Andy Richter and Weird Al Yankovic) as they perform an old-fashioned hold up of Dexter Jettster’s diner (aptly named “Dex’s Diner“) on the planet Coruscant.

The episode was jam-packed with character cameos including Boba Fett, Jar Jar Binks, and even Lando Calrissian (as voiced by the legendary Billy Dee Williams). While they were not featured in this segment, the show was also to have had Anthony Daniels reprise his role as C-3PO, while characters like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Emperor Palpatine would have been voiced by comedic actors like Seth Green and Seth McFarlane.

While “Dog Day Afternoon” is only a small taste of what Star Wars Detours could have been, it is probably a prime example of exactly what kind of show Star Wars Detours would have been.

Oddly enough, Lucasfilm filed a new trademark for Star Wars Detours back in 2018, but they have not shown any inclination that they plan to release the show anytime soon. There has been speculation that the show may eventually be released in Disney’s streaming service, Disney+, but in a 2019 interview, Seth Green shot down the notion saying that it was unlikely to happen.

During the same interview, Green expressed that the only way he could ever see Detours getting released was if there was enough fan demand for it. It’s worked for other projects in the past like Deadpool, which saw some test footage leaked online that led to fan demand for the movie to actually be made. Could “Dog Day Afternoon” give Star Wars Detours the push it needs with fans to get the series released to the world? It’s too soon to say.

Unfortunately, “Dog Day Afternoon” has already been taken down from Reddit due to a copyright claim, so this brief look into this forgotten piece of Star Wars history is gone once again. But you know what they say, once it’s on the internet, good luck bottling it back up! With that said, you can now see it here!

Are you hoping to see Star Wars Detours finally get released? Or would you rather the series be left locked away in a vault forever? Be sure to let us know in the comments section below and stay tuned to Geek Anything for all the latest Star Wars news!
