‘Chaos Walking’ Trailer: The Oft-Delayed Dystopian Thriller Is Set For Release

The long-delayed Chaos Walking is reportedly ready for release after a troubled production and extensive reshoots– it was originally filmed in 2017!– and Lionsgate has its fingers (paws?) crossed that it will finally hit theaters… well, soon.  It was previously locked in for a January 22, 2021 release, but that was announced before the pandemic.  But if the movie is complete, that date could still hold.

Based on the 2008 novel, The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness, Chaos Walking was directed by Doug Liman (Live, Die, Repeat) with a screenplay by Ness and Christopher Ford (Spider-Man: Homecoming).  Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley head up an all-star cast in this dystopian fantasy.

Here is the film’s official synopsis:

In the near future, Todd Hewitt (Holland) has been brought up to believe that a pathogen has killed all the women in a colony world and unleashed Noise, the special ability to hear people’s and animals’ minds. Later, he comes upon a patch of silence and soon discovers the source of the silence: a mysterious woman named Viola Eade (Ridley) – the first he has ever met. On the run, they learn more about the true history of the New World.

The majority of folks don’t pay much attention to the makings of movies or to the turmoil that might plague them, so the behind-the-scenes struggles are nowhere evident in this trailer. The trailer also includes such bold (if kind of trite) phrases like “Forget Everything You Know” and “One Worldwide Movie Event.”  Will such hyperbole help sell this, especially during this lingering pandemic?

As the trailer reveals, Chaos Walking boasts an impressive cast that also includes Mads Mikkelsen as David Prentiss, Nick Jonas as Davy Prentiss, David Oyelowo as Aaron, Demián Bichir as Ben Moore, Kurt Sutter as Cillian Boyd, and Cynthia Erivo as Hildy.

The relative success of The Croods 2 this past weekend seems to hint that audiences are growing more comfortable with the idea of going back to theaters.  Hopefully, by the time Chaos Walking arrives, things will be back in full swing.

Chaos Walking is tentatively scheduled to open in theaters on January 22, 2021.
