Rumor: Sony Eyes ‘Dusk’ For Their Marvel Film Universe

While Sony and Marvel have worked out a deal to allow Spider-Man and his supplementary characters to appear in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony still very much owns the film rights to the Spider-Man character and everyone in his world. They’ve already done fairly well with one Spider-Man-less Spider-Man universe film with Venom (2018), with a sequel for that film to be release this summer and another spin-off film, Morbius The Living Vampire, slated to release in 2022. With no signs of slowing down on their own miniature Spider-Man themed Marvel Universe (the Sony Marvel Universe, or SMU for short), now they might be planning a solo film for yet another character; the obscure Spider-Man ally Dusk.

Rumors recently started circulating online that suggested that Sony is looking for more Spider-Man related characters to develop into live-action films, and they recently set their sights on the classic 90’s character of Dusk. The hero has a number of unique powers including teleportation, clairvoyance, shadow manipulation, darkforce projection, and a regenerative healing factor; meaning they would bring quite an interesting array of abilities to the table for their own movie.

While several people have carried the Dusk mantle in the comics (including Peter Parker himself during a brief period where Spider-Man was wanted for murder), the most well-known iteration of the character is Cassie St. Commons. Commons was a member of a short-lived superhero team called The Slingers that was composed of four young heroes that all carried on mantles previously held by Peter Parker during a previous storyline where he was unable to be Spider-Man. Each member of The Slingers had powers that were reminiscent of Spider-Man in some way, but they all very much stood on their own with unique abilities. Other members of The Slingers include Hornet, Prodigy, and Ricochet. Maybe Sony is looking at bringing the whole team to live-action in the future? It sure wouldn’t be an Avengers level event, but it would certainly be interesting to see.

In a scoop first shared by The Illuminerdi, this freshly rumored dusk film is said to be part of the ever-growing stable of characters in the SMU. There has not been any talent attached to this project yet, but it would be very early in development at this stage so that would largely make sense. As it stands, even the existence of this new Dusk project is nay but a rumor.

Dusk would join quite a few other projects that we are already aware of in development at Sony including Kraven The Hunter, Nightwatch, Madame Web, Jackpot, The Sinister Six, and a female-centric movie that is being developed by Olivia Wilde that has been speculated to be Spider-Woman. While these characters are all rooted in Marvel Comics, they would be their own separate universe from the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe we all already know and love.

The Sony Marvel Universe is in a weird place as their biggest character is on loan to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is a separate entity. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously mentioned that Tom Holland‘s Spider-Man would potentially be making appearances in both universes, which would likely mean Marvel has somewhat of a say in what Sony is doing with the character (or rather ‘characters’) in the SMU as it develops. After Marvel and Sony were able to renegotiate a deal to keep Spider-Man appearing in the MCU, Kevin Feig had this to say in regards to Tom Holland’s MCU iteration of Spider-Man being used in the SMU as well:

I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it. Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.

That means that it might be entirely possible to see Tom Holland pop up as Spider-Man in a future Venom film, or maybe even in the upcoming Morbius movie. It also leaves the door open for other Sony Marvel universe characters to potentially make the jump into the MCU proper for a bigger appearance (like Morbius for a Blade or Nightstalkers film?). As long as Sony and Marvel are playing nice with one another, the possibilities are endless.

Hopefully, we will find out some more information about the recently rumored Dusk movie in the near future. In the meantime, we’ll keep an eye out for the first trailer for the Venom sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which should be dropping any time now as the film is scheduled to release this June.
