The Sandman has been summoned. And you didn’t even need to spill your own blood to see him arrive. The teaser for Netflix’s long-awaited DC Comics series adaptation dropped and color me teased.

Announced way back in 2019, production was delayed due to Covid-19. Tom Sturridge stars as the titular Sandman. As for the rest of the cast, they were revealed at the beginning of the year, with additional cast members introduced a few months later.

The short 73-second trailer beautiful recreates a 3-page scene from the comics and centers on the first appearance of The Sandman. In it, “Daemon King” Roderick Burgess (Game of Thrones‘ Charles Dance) leads a rite to capture Death of the Endless. But instead, Dream is trapped. You can check out the trailer below.

Here is the official series description, from Netflix:

A rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama, and legend are seamlessly interwoven, ‘The Sandman’ follows the people and places affected by Morpheus, the Dream King, as he mends the cosmic — and human — mistakes he’s made during his vast existence.

It is believed that the first season will focus on the first two story arcs of the series, Preludes and Nocturnes, and A Doll’s House.

If you are not familiar with the DC Comics series, The Sandman helped change how comics were perceived back in the late 1980s. British writer Neil Gaiman‘s fantasy series, based on an obscure Golden Age character, blended classical literature with a 50s pulp horror comic vibe combined within the DC universe. It helped usher in a new era of character-driven storytelling, picking up the baton from the likes of Alan Moore and Frank Miller. And It single-handedly kicked off DC’s late, lamented alternative Vertigo Comics line.

The Sandman comes to Netflix “soon.”
