Will ‘Black Canary’ See Other ‘Birds Of Prey’ Take Flight? At Least One Remains Hopeful

It is hard to believe that it’s only been a year and a half since the world was graced with Warner Bros and DC Entertainment’s live-action comic book adaptation Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) (2020) last year. The film was a hit with fans and critics, but due to its release during the earliest stages of the ongoing global pandemic, it didn’t quite blow up the box office the way the studios were expecting.
The film managed to bring in twice its budget with a box office take of $201.9 million, but compared to other similar big-budget comic book adaptations, this was absolutely considered to be a diminishing return. Still, the DC Comics brand carried on and fans have seen the return of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn in The Suicide Squad (2021), with plans already in place for Jurnee Smollett’s Black Canary, another Birds Of Prey star, to get her very own spinoff solo film on HBO Max. So are there hopes of seeing any of the other Birds Of Prey making an appearance in the upcoming project?
Jurnee Smollett as Black Canary and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as the Huntress

With Black Canary in full-fledged development for a very vague “sometime in the future” on HBO Max, it is difficult to say who may or may not be appearing in the upcoming film. While we know Jurnee Smollett is definitely returning to the titular role as Black Canary, what are the odds that we will see the return of Rosie Perez’s Renee Montoya or Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Huntress turning up for this all-new DC Comics film?
One Birds Of Prey star seems to think that’s possible she may get the call while also understanding that it is entirely possible that she might not. Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who played Helena Bertinelli (aka The Huntress), seems to appear hopeful that she may get the chance to join the project. In a recent interview with Collider, Winstead said:
“I’m super excited about the Black Canary movie. I love Jurnee, I love the work that she did and I can’t wait to see what they do with that. I have no idea what other characters are gonna potentially be involved. I don’t know if Huntress is gonna continue on in some way. You know, there are so many different iterations of Huntress whether it’s in the comics or in TV and film, and so I don’t know if my version of her is gonna continue on. But, I do love her and if there was an opportunity to do that then I would be down for it, so we’ll see!”
While Winstead confirms that she has not been contacted about reprising the role by Warner Brothers, she certainly seems excited about the prospect. In a previous interview with ComicBook she mentioned that she was absolutely “down for anything” when it comes to returning to the big screen as The Huntress:
“I’m down for anything, really, I think Huntress is such a fun character, I don’t know if there’s any plans in the future to continue that version of Huntress, because there’s a few different versions out there, in the comic books there’s different versions, so I don’t know if that’s what’s in store. But I’m happy I got the chance to do at least one iteration of her and if that iteration continues then I’d love to be a part of it, but we’ll see what happens.”
Currently Black Canary doesn’t have a set release date (or even an official title!), but it is in development for HBO Max for an expected release sometime in late 2022 or 2023. The only cast member formally attached to the project is Smollett.
