If you’ve been growing increasingly frustrated with the state of movie studios shifting release dates around, you certainly aren’t alone! Thankfully for fans of Marvel and Sony‘s Venom (2018), we have some excellent news that sees the latest film in the series moving forward rather than backward!

People have been begging studios to make a Venom movie since not long after the formerly villainous antihero first debuted in 1988. The character quickly became a fan favorite and was one of the most prominent Marvel characters of the 1990s (dude was EVERYWHERE). While we finally saw him in live-action back in 2007’s Spider-Man 3, fans were left disappointed with that film’s interpretation of the character and left wanting for something better.

Sony finally got things back on the right track in 2018 with a movie focused entirely on their star Symbiote with Venom starring Tom Hardy in the titular role. The film was a hit with audiences and has become a guilty pleasure for even the most elite comic book movie fans. A sequel was quickly greenlit after Venom managed to bring in an impressive $856-million at the US box office.

The sequel, titled Venom: Let There Be Carnage, has been in the works for a while now and has been the victim of the ongoing global pandemic. The film has seen its theatrical release date shifted around multiple times, with Sony having settled on a September 24th release date only to recently push it back almost a month to October 14th. With the recent rise in COVID cases and the safety of attending movie theaters facing scrutiny, there have been rumors running that Sony may even push the movie back further and it might slip into 2022 when Sony might expect better box office numbers. Now that doesn’t seem to be the case!

Sony confirmed this week that they have had a change of heart and are moving Venom: Let There Be Carnage back forward two weeks for an October 1st release date. Tickets are on sale for the film now for premium large formats (like Dolby), IMAX, and even 3D (We thought studios had moved on from the trend?), and of course for standard format screenings.

If we had to guess, you can thank the recent success of Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which just shattered box office records with a $90-million Labor Day weekend. If a movie based on a character most general audiences have never heard of can bring in those kinds of numbers, we can only imagine Sony is drooling over what they think a Venom sequel might bring in.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage sees Tom Hardy returning as Eddie Brock (aka Venom), who will be joined by Woody Harrelson, Naomie Harris, Michelle Williams, Stephen Graham, and Reid Scott. The film is directed by Andy Serkis. and is set to be released in theaters on October 1st, 2021.
