“It’s Always Someone You Know” reads the tagline to Scream (2022), the fifth entry in the Scream franchise that first began a quarter of a century ago with director Wes Craven’s 1996 horror masterpiece that reinvented the slasher genre for a new generation. This new film, which has dropped the numbering in favor of simply being the latest in a long list of years-later sequels that take up the name of the original film, seems to be following in the original’s footsteps with hopes to reinvent what a slasher film can be. The genre itself has grown stale again over the last twenty-five years, so could the Scream brand once again be the spark that ignites a slasher revolution?

Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group have just dropped the first trailer for the film that promises to bring the terror to a new generation of horror fans. Once again there appears to be a slasher in Woodsboro, and the current crop of teens are now set to face off with the ghosts of slashers past (although we assume not literally ghosts). Thankfully, those who have survived prior encounters with Ghostface are quick to rise to the occasion, stepping in to try and put a stop to this senseless violence once and for all… for the fifth time. Original franchise stars Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courteney Cox are all returning yet again for this new venture, which is the first film in the series to be produced following the death of series creator Wes Craven.
