Actress Billie Piper let it be known she’d return to the British sci-fi series, Doctor Who “if the circumstances were right.” She made the comments on her public Cameo video page.

Piper, best known as a pop star when cast by Russell T. Davies to play new companion Rose Tyler alongside Christopher Eccleston in 2004, starred in the series for two years. Only 21 when filming began, the actress just celebrated her 39th birthday on September 22. She appeared opposite both Eccleston and 10th Doctor David Tennant as Rose Tyler, a plucky working-class shop girl from 2005, London, Earth. Rose became very popular with fans, often appearing near the top of polls rating the companions.

The actress left the series way back in 2007, after the long-running series’ 2nd season. She returned to play Rose Tyler in several episodes in the fourth season in 2009. Then came back again in a cameo during David Tennant’s final story, “End of Time” in 2010. That was also the last episode helmed by returning showrunner, Russell T. Davies.  She also returned to the series for its 50th-anniversary special, “The Day of the Doctor.” Although there, she didn’t play Rose. She played the conscience of The Moment, a living weapon built by the Time Lords. The Doctor (as played by John Hurt) used the Moment during the apocalyptic conflict with the Daleks known as the Last Great Time War.

Piper recently began making videos with Cameo to help raise money for Choose Love.  Choose love is a charity that helps provide shelter and services for refugees around the world.

“Would I ever go back? I think if the circumstances and the story were right, I feel like I’ve had enough time away from it to really, really want back in on it. I feel like my kids are at a good age and may appreciate that too, which is often my incentive to do anything.”

While the actress has not played Rose Tyler on television since 2010, she hasn’t completely left the role behind. She played Rose in 2017 for Big Finish opposite David Tennant in three stories. She also recorded her own series, Rose Tyler – The Dimension Cannon for the audio production company in 2019. The series tells how Rose found her way back to help the Doctor from a parallel world. She returned to stop the Daleks and save the universe in 2009’s “Stolen Earth.”

Would you welcome Rose back to the series? Or would you want to see Piper return but as a different character? That’s something only one other companion has done in the show’s nearly 60 year history. In 1981, Jacqueline Hill came back to the series after 16 years. She played Barbara Wright, companion to the 1st Doctor. First appearing in the pilot, An Unearthly Child in 1963, she left the series in 1965. She returned to play an alien priestess Lexa in Meglos with Tom Baker as the Doctor.
