Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro and the horror genre is arguably the best combination of two things since peanut butter first met jelly. The man has made some of the most visually stunning and imaginative films in the last quarter-century, many of which were based on his own original concepts. Fans of the filmmaker will be delighted to hear that he has partnered up with Netflix for an all-new horror-themed anthology series dubbed Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet Of Curiosities. The series is set to premiere sometime next year and is absolutely stacked with talent from the writers to the directors and of course the cast.
Previously titled Guillermo del Toro Presents: 10 After Midnight, this new anthology series will see a collection of live-action horror stories from various styles and perspectives. Don’t expect these to be too similar to one another as del Toro seems focused on making sure each story stands strongly on its own, each with a unique flavor you won’t find in the other stories.
These eight individual stories will carry varying themes across the horror spectrum, bringing us adaptations of works of original stories by Guillermo del Toro as well as from authors including H.P. Lovecraft, Michael Shea, Henry Kuttner, and Emily Carroll. Guillermo del Toro himself handpicked the teams of writers and directors set to tackle each episode, which will include pairings like David S. Goyer (writer) with David Prior (director), Regina Corrado (writer) with Guillermo Navarro (director), Lee Patterson (writer) with Keith Thomas (director), Aaron Stewart-Ahn (writer) with Panos Cosmatos (co-writer and director), Mika Watkins (writer) with Catherine Hardwicke (director), and Haley Z. Boston (writer) with Ana Lily Amirpour (director). There will also be episodes from Jennifer Kent and Vincenzo Natali which see each of them tackling both writing and directing duties.
As if all of that talent behind the camera wasn’t enough for you, Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet Of Curiosities also features an astounding amount of on-camera talent as well. Tim Blake Nelson, Crispin Glover, Peter Weller, Hannah Galway, Essie Davis, Andrew Lincoln, F. Murray Abraham, Luke Roberts, Glynn Turman, Ben Barnes, Elpidia Carrilo, Sebastian Roché, David Hewlett, and Demetrius Grosse have already signed on for the series with even more cast members to be announced later.
Production recently began in Toronto with series creator Guillermo del Toro acting as co-showrunner and executive producer alongside J. Miles Dale, who shares both of those job titles. Gary Ungar is also executive producing the series along with Regina Corrado who is serving as co-executive producer. The series is expected to premiere sometime in 2022.
