‘Legends Of Tomorrow’: Dominic Purcell Angrily Announced He Was Quitting… But It Was A “Joke?”

Dominic Purcell caused ripples on social media over the weekend, when he seemingly angrily announced that he was quitting the series Legends of Tomorrow and hinted that he was unhappy with Warner Bros at a corporate level. However, he quickly clarified that this was a joke, although he stated he was actually exiting the series as a regular after the upcoming sixth season (something he already announced in February), but would be open for return appearances.  He then deleted both posts with a new message.

However, his first post read:

“Deal isn’t done. I have no interest.  What ever cash they throw on the corporate level. Im walking away from @cw_legendsoftomorrow.  It’s been a total pleasure and a humbling experience bringing @dccomics iconic character #heatwave (aka) MICK RORY to life. I smashed this character — not an actor in the world could have done better.”

He also wrote:

“The studio does not care. The actors[‘] work ethic and talent must give them the confidence to question authority. Much love to all. It’s not lost on me how very fortunate I am.”

Regarding his returning as needed, he posted:

“It’s a handshake deal with [Legends co-showrunner] Phil Klemmer. I don’t have a beef with studio @warnerbrostv.”

He also stated that his earlier post was a “joke” and something of a publicity stunt for Legends which has always been the underdog of The CW’s Arrowverse.

“Let’s see how much [press] and [CW’s Legends of Tomorrow] can get tomorrow. Me and MICK been such naughty boys.”

Purcell has been a regular member of the cast of Legends since the beginning, and his Mick Rory/Heatwave was presented as the partner of Wentworth Miller’s Leonard Snart/Captain Cold. But Miller stepped down as a series regular after the first season, although he recurred in Season 2 and has popped up in guest appearances since.

Legends is an ensemble and the cast has constantly evolved over its six seasons. Also, part of the original cast, Ciara Renée (Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl) and Falk Hentschel (Carter Hall/Hawkman) were let go after the first season after viewers hated their storyline. Arthur Darvill (Rip Hunter) left after S2 but recurred on S3. Victor Garber (Victor Stein/Firestorm) and Franz Drameh (Jefferson “Jax” Jackson/Firestorm) left after the third season after Garber landed a leading role on Broadway in Hello Dolly!.

With the departure of Dominic Purcell, Caity Lotz (Sara Lance/White Canary) is the only original cast member remaining, unless you count Amy Louise Pemberton who provides the voice of Gideon. The cast currently also includes Tala Ashe as Zari Tarazi, Jes Macallan as Ava Sharpe, Olivia Swann as Astra Logue, Adam Tsekhman as Gary Green, Shayan Sobhian as Behrad Tarazi, Nick Zano as Nate Heywood/Steel, and Matt Ryan as John Constantine.  Lisseth Chavez joins S6 as  Esperanza “Spooner” Cruz.

Legends of Tomorrow S6 premiere on Sunday, May 2, at 8 pm EST on The CW.
